kayak adventures

Yesterday was a classic in the deb deb adventure department.

One where we decide to go on a short kayak ride on a lovely afternoon, only to return 4 hours later, in the dark….   i really should know better by now. Get my deb deb doing something she loves, and sometimes she goes a little over the top when it comes to outings… not that i didn’t LOVE it, i did… more that i would have brought maybe a little water, sustenance and perhaps a few more layers… considering it’s nearly december.

It was a fun little adventure, thought i’d show you some of the highlights.
Keep track of the numbers… it’s all about the map, scale, and how we function in this world.

#1 The Starting Point:

Kim: “Hmmmm it’s a lovely day out deb deb, how about we forgo our planned walk to the library and head out for a little kayak for our post lunch break?”

Deb Deb: “Sounds like a grand plan”, (hurrying up to put her layers together, two coats, double pair o socks, mitts, hat, waterproof gloves, scarf… not sure why i missed that clue)  you think i should bring a little water?

Kim: Well maybe just one container, we’re probably not going that far today (as she puts on a lot less layers, no hat, silly pink polka dot boots)

#2 Big Decision Time

Kim: “Right, left or straight ahead honey pie?

Deb Deb: Straight ahead, straight ahead we’ll explore the bottom of the island… it’s so nice and calm. (hardly concealing her glee)

Kim: “Okey dokey pokie… long as you think that nasty wind isn’t going to catch us off guard again, i’m in!

#3 Kim’s Silly Question

Wherein i say… “hmmm it’s such a lovely day…  you think it’s at all possible circle the island? ” You think we could actually make it?

wherein deb deb says.. “hell yea! (now i don’ t know how she could have been so convinced, neither of us had even scoped it out on the map.. in retrospect…. )

In Unison: okdokey, let’s just do it!!! To hell with work, making a living and responsibility!!

#4 First Small Whine

where in i say: hmmm this little paddle across just the bottom of said island is taking WAY longer than i thought… not so sure it’s a great idea now to circle the whole island… honey pie?  I’m kinda thinking this island either has a big ass, or we are in serious trouble.
where in deb deb says… NOOOOo we got to do it now, you can do it, it’s going to be fun, it’s just big at the bottom, pretty sure, yea pretty certain that’s why it seems long… let’s just get to the corner …you’ll seee piece o cake

#5 Big Decision Time
where in deb deb says… oh we HAVE to do it, it’s beautiful here, and it’s calm and, and, and…

and wherein i reluctantly say, knowing there’s no going back… okdokey, i’m in if you promise to tow me when i can’t paddle any more!!! Remember i’m an old lady now. (where in my honey promptly motors off so i pretty much have to follow so as not to get left behind!)

#6 Observation
where in i think to myself (as deb deb way in front of me now)… hmmm this isn’t so bad, pretty i’m sure we are at least half way now… pretty sure. (Uhhh did you look at the map??)

#7 Observation
Where in i think to myself… hmmm i’m getting pretty tired now, and hey… is that the sun starting to set?… oh wait… look there’s the mainland just ahead of me… we’ll that’s not too bad ((Uhhh did you look at the map??… NOT)
-  -  -  -
#8 Observation
where in i think to myself, fuck… that’s not the mainland shore, it’s just another large bay, and that bit of land at the end? that’s not the main land, that’s just the end of the frigging large assed bay… oy…. don’t panic.. it’s ok… I can do it… i can… distract yourself kimi… hmmm isn’t that sunset beautiful, and hey isn’t that the moon, oh hellow mr seal!

#9 Observation
where in i think to myself, oy this better be the end of the island, it’s getting a little dark out here now! And wherein i finally catch up with deb deb, who’s been on this end of the island… and wistfully ask if it is indeed the end of the island? And where in she mocks me for thinking it way long ago.

#10 Observation time
ok… home stretch, land ho… phewf a second wind, i’m flying… look i can see home… well if it weren’t so damn dark i know i’d be able to see home!!

#11 Decision Time
Where in i finally catch up to deb long enough to say, we have to be careful we don’t get hit by a boat while crossing this area so we best stick to shore…and where in i promptly loose her as i do the exact opposite and head across on what i consider the quickest path home!! Every woman for themselves… yiha!

#12 Milestone
where i finally catch up with deb deb in the dark, turns out my bright yellow jacket not so visible in pitch black new moon evenings.

#13 Milestone
Terra Firma… phewf where in we both fall on the shore, frozen, tired, but oh so happy… quite the little adventure. I  mapped it out, just over 15 km, and just under 4 hours.
